It is the system that holds every adverse event case, moves it through processing, and submits it to regulators. Knowing your way around one is close to a baseline requirement for the field.

Three systems dominate the conversation: Oracle Argus Safety, ARISglobal’s ARISg (now part of its LifeSphere platform), and Veeva Vault Safety. They do fundamentally the same job. They do it with different histories, different architectures, and different philosophies. This is an honest look at how they compare, who uses them, and what a learner entering the field should actually focus on.

What a safety database has to do

When people talk about “the safety database” in a generic sense, they are very often picturing Argus.

Its strengths are maturity and breadth. It is a comprehensive, deeply configurable system that can handle very large case volumes and complex global reporting obligations. Historically it was deployed on-premise, and many organisations still run it that way, though Oracle also offers cloud-hosted options. Oracle has added AI-assisted features for case processing, including help with structured data population and coding suggestions.

The trade-off is complexity. Argus is powerful precisely because it is highly configurable, and that configurability comes with a steep learning curve and significant implementation and maintenance overhead. It is a system that rewards expertise and can frustrate newcomers.

ARISglobal ARISg / LifeSphere

ARISg is the safety product from ARISglobal, a vendor that specialises in safety and regulatory software rather than being part of a large general-purpose technology company. ARISg is the older product name; ARISglobal now positions its safety capability within the broader LifeSphere platform.

ARISglobal’s distinguishing bet has been automation. The company has invested heavily in AI and cognitive-computing features aimed at reducing manual effort in case intake and processing, and it markets automation as a central part of its value proposition. For organisations that want to push more of the routine case-processing workload onto the system, ARISglobal positions itself as the automation-forward specialist.

As a specialist vendor, ARISglobal is smaller than Oracle, and its installed base, while substantial, is not as large as Argus. Its appeal tends to be strongest for organisations that value its safety-and-regulatory focus and its automation roadmap.

Veeva Vault Safety

Veeva Vault Safety is the newer, cloud-native entrant. Veeva built its business on cloud applications for the life sciences industry, and Vault Safety is part of the wider Vault platform that also includes clinical (Vault CDMS), regulatory (Vault RIM), and quality (Vault QualityDocs) applications.

Its distinguishing feature is unification. For an organisation already running other Vault applications, Vault Safety promises safety data living on the same cloud platform as clinical, regulatory, and quality data, which reduces integration friction and the number of separate systems to maintain. It was built cloud-native from the outset rather than being an older system moved to the cloud later, which shapes how it handles updates and scalability.

Being newer, Vault Safety has a smaller installed base than Argus, and it is still building out depth in some areas that the older systems have accumulated over many years. But it is gaining adoption, particularly among organisations attracted to the unified-platform argument or starting fresh without legacy safety systems to migrate.

Which employers use which

For someone deciding where to invest their learning time, the employer picture matters more than the feature list.

Oracle Argus has the broadest presence across large pharmaceutical companies and the major CROs, and that includes the CRO and pharma employers active in India. Because so much of the global ICSR processing workload runs through Argus, a large share of pharmacovigilance roles, especially the case-processing roles where most careers begin, involve Argus in some form. From a pure employability standpoint, it is the single most useful system to have touched.

ARISglobal’s ARISg and LifeSphere appear at organisations that have chosen its safety-and-regulatory focus or its automation direction. Exposure to it is a genuine asset, but it is encountered by fewer entry-level candidates than Argus.

Veeva Vault Safety exposure is growing, concentrated at organisations that have adopted the wider Vault platform or built new safety operations on it. It is increasingly worth understanding conceptually, and hands-on Vault experience is a differentiator where an employer uses it, but as of 2026 it is not yet as commonly required for entry-level roles as Argus.

What a learner should actually train on

Here is the point that matters most, and it is easy to miss when the discussion turns into a product bake-off. The specific database is the surface. The regulatory logic underneath is the substance, and it is common to all three.

Every one of these systems processes an ICSR the same way conceptually: intake, coding, assessment, review, and reporting. Every one uses MedDRA to code events and WHODrug to code medications. Every one applies the same regulatory definitions of seriousness, expectedness, and causality. Every one submits in E2B format under the same ICH standards. The buttons and screens differ. The discipline does not.

This has a direct consequence for how to learn. Trying to master all three databases before starting a career is neither necessary nor efficient. What works is to understand the process thoroughly and get genuinely hands-on with one system, most usefully Argus given its installed base. Once you can process a case competently in one database, moving to another is largely a matter of learning a new interface, because you already understand what you are trying to accomplish and why.

The skills that transfer across every safety database, and that employers actually screen for, are:

  • MedDRA coding, including the hierarchy and its pitfalls
  • Seriousness, expectedness, and causality assessment against reference safety information

Do I need to know all three safety databases?
